AFBB has gotta be my most misunderstood song. Ever.
I can’t tell you how many chicks have blown me off (and vice-versa), as soon as I reach. But that turns out to be THEIR problem, not mine. I stand by AFBB and my reply to haters? FYIYDLI!
The concept came to me in an instant, riding a flash of total illumination, as I considered my own bottom-line expectations for a potential female love interest. What ARE the bare-minimum qualifications I’ll accept, anyway?
That’s when I peeled away all the layers of my personal psychosexual onion, until three items remained: bare, bold, and unapologetic: “Tits, teeth, and a fine boom-boom.”
Later, I briefly toyed with the idea of recording a sanitized version of the song, thinking that “lips and fingertips” might serve as a safe, radio-friendly substitute for “tits and teeth,” but just as quickly rejected it.
I point this out as an item of curiosity for the potentially-curious only, since it didn’t happen. Making the change, I knew, would do more than dilute the elegance and simplicity of the original lyrics; it might also distract listeners by posing a logical inconsistency — since a woman with tits and teeth will surely also possess lips and fingertips, while the inverse is not necessarily true. [Besides, I believe I was briefly channelling the departed spirit of blues legend John Lee Hooker the night I wrote AFBB, and I must be true to our original phrasing and intent.]
Another item for the curious: Later that night-into-morning, during an imaginary chat with Mr. Hooker, when I told him that I felt, as a “white boy,” a little pretentious in staking out so strong a blues voice in the song, John Lee cut me off with these words:“White boy can too sing the blues. All you gotta do to sing the blues is suffer. And you done suffered like a motherfucker, motherfucker.”
Thanks for straightening me out on that, Mr. Hooker. And thanks for the help with the song!
